Which Brow Method Is Right For Me?

Updated: Jan 2, 2021

Hey Girl,

So, you’ve finally decided to get your brows done. Well thank you for narrowing your search down to me!

You’ve probably heard about #microblading before, but there are other forms of semi-permanent brow techniques. #Ombre brows and #Combination brows are newer forms of semi-permanent makeup (SPMU). Hopefully this will help you decide which brow technique is right for you.

First thing’s first. I often get asked “Is this the same as a tattoo?” The short answer to this question is, Yes! When pigment is implanted into the skin it is effectively a form of body tattooing. The pigment used in microblading and other forms of SPMU is what makes it different from a traditional tattoo. SPMU pigments break down in the skin over time which allows the colour to fade out. Whilst with traditional tattooing, the pigments used contain permanent properties that last in the skin forever.

So now that we understand that, lets discuss the different types of semi-permanent brow techniques.

Microblading

Microblading creates fine hair like strokes which mimics your natural eyebrow hairs. The pigment is applied to the skin using a disposable handheld tool.

Depending on the microblading artists ability, pigment will be carefully and delicately implanted into the skin to match the flow of your natural brow hairs (if you have any). We may go over the strokes 2 or 3 times depending on how your skin absorbs the pigment.

This technique isn’t ideal for everyone. Those with oily skin, large pores and those with a Fitzpatrick skin type of 5 and 6 will have poor retention issues as the hair strokes are likely to fade sooner and is likely to migrate (blur) under the skin. This is also the case for those with active lifestyles such as frequent gym, sauna or sunbed users.

Microblading can cause trauma to the skin if too many touch ups/ colour boosts are performed, which is why I would always encourage no more than 3 touch ups to reduce your risk of scarring.

Microblading is suitable for those with a normal skin type, and is a perfect choice for those who want a natural brow look.

Ombre Brows

Ombre brows also referred to as powder brows is the technique designed to emulate a pencilled brow look. It is performed using a digital device which creates tiny pixels in the skin.

The brow artist will lightly brush over your skin with the SPMU machine and depending on your preference, will create a softer brow front (ombre style) or a fuller defined brow look (powder style).

We’ve all seen the dreaded block brow look. This style could end up like this depending on who is carrying out the treatment, but you can be rest assured, we will not turn your brows into a block brow. If that is your preference then you may want to consider another brow artist.

Ombre brows are suitable for all skin types, particularly for those with #oily skin, active lifestyles and darker skin tones m. Yearly touch ups are recommended to maintain the brows. It is a perfect choice for those who prefer a soft pencilled in brow look.

Combination Brows

This method combines both microblading and the powder brow technique. Hair strokes are placed at the start of the brow and the rest of the brow is powdered over using the powder brow technique. Hair strokes can be placed throughout the brow with a softer powder technique depending on your style preference.

Combination brows are suitable for most skin types and lifestyles.

So now we know more about the styles of brow techniques; which of these is right for you? Think about how your wear your brows on a day to day basis. Do you pencil or powder your brows in most days? If the answer to this is yes, then you may want to consider a ombre/powder brow. However, if you don't wear much or any make up, and your brows lack definition, then you may be an ideal candidate for Microblading, depending on your skin type and lifestyle. If you like the look of both techniques, then why not combine the both and get combination brows?

Still undecided of which brow technique to choose? Don’t worry, we can discuss which brow method will be most suitable for your skin and lifestyle at your appointment.

I hope to see you soon!

Kim xx
